27 reported pieces across electronics, navigation, lighting, power, watermakers and comms and safety. Nothing here is orphaned: each guide also lives on its hub.
The old AM Wholesale desk existed because yards buy in cartons and specifications, not in weekend specials. This is how a reseller still thinks.

Starlink changed the coastal internet argument. Iridium still owns the distress-and-truly-offshore argument. Many Australian cruisers now carry both.
Low-light cameras show a scene. Thermal cameras show heat. Iris-style marine cameras earn a place on a night run; they do not replace a lookout or a radar.
An EPIRB belongs to the boat. A PLB belongs to a person. Registration, expiry and a 406 MHz beacon that AMSA knows about are the whole conversation.
A marine VHF is a licensed transmitter. DSC is how a modern radio shouts for help with a position. ACMA qualifications and an MMSI are not optional extras.
Couple, climate and washing-up decide the number. A watermaker then has to replace that number in the hours you will tolerate the pump.
Heat, bloom and estuary silt are harder on membranes than ocean miles. Flush, pickle and pre-filters are the whole job.
Two families sat on the old AM Wholesale list. The useful differences are automation, frame style and the service bench that will still pick up in Queensland.

Size from litres per day and hours you will actually run the pump, not from a US-gallon sticker. Power, space and tropical maintenance decide the rest.
One battery starts the outboard. The other runs the sounder, the lights and the fridge. The useful bit is the isolator that stops a three-hour session killing the start.
Size an inverter for the one appliance you will not give up, then for the minutes it runs. A 3,000-watt sticker is not a meal plan.
Lithium wins on usable capacity and weight. AGM still wins on simplicity and heat-tolerant manners. The wrong drop-in is how you cook an alternator.
Victron became the Australian default because the pieces talk to each other. The useful job is architecture — alternator, charger, inverter, monitor — not collecting blue boxes.
Work lighting is a beam, a switch and a courtesy toward the next skipper. This is how to light a deck at 2am without building a lighthouse.
Atmosphere lighting is optional. The lights that say what you are, which way you point, and whether you are fishing are not. This is the Australian reading of those rules.

A 12-volt trailer boat can look like a flybridge and then fail to start. This is how to light a tinny or a 7-metre fibreglass hull without flattening the cranking battery.
Blue transom glow is a Gold Coast cliché. The useful questions are hull penetration, colour law, draw on a 12-volt bank, and whether you are lighting fish or confusing a skipper.

Most “faulty plotters” are antenna, ground, power and heading problems. This is the punch-list Coomera techs walk before they blame the glass.

The argument is not which logo is prettier. It is which card you will keep current for the bar, the reef and the next software generation of your MFD.
An autopilot is a hydraulic or mechanical slave with a heading sensor. East-coast work — bars, shipping and long northerly hops — punishes a unit that was sized from a brochure.
Dome radars win on sailing masts and trailer-boat arches. Open arrays win on range and target separation. Australian water decides the rest.
Class B is what most recreational cruisers need. Class A is a workplace. The expensive mistake is buying a receiver and thinking you are visible.
The screen is not the sounder. Frequency, tilt, mounting and the Airmar family decide whether you see bait under a Gold Coast bar or a smear.

The useful order is power, network, position, heading, then glass. Screens last. Backbones and batteries decide whether the refit works on a night run north.

Four families still dominate Australian helms. The useful differences are mapping, sonar, autopilot heritage and who will answer the phone in Queensland.
A backbone is cheaper than a second failed plotter. This is how Australian yards actually lay NMEA 2000 — and where 0183 still earns a seat.
The three boxes look similar on a chandlery wall. On an Australian helm they do different jobs — and buying the wrong one is still the most expensive first mistake.
